Home #3 Dedicated August
Fourth Ave. in Kankakee on Saturday, August 28, 2010. The new owners of the energy-
efficient home are Jose and Patricia Cabrales and their three children.
The Cabrales family was all smiles as they celebrated with approximately seventy (70)
volunteers, donors, friends and family members at the home dedication. Jose Cabrales,
who works construction and is a swing-shift manager at the Court Street
McDonald’s said” I am so thankful for Habitat and all the volunteers who made this dream
a possibility. My family is excited about moving into our new home and are so proud that
we helped build it ”. John Fitts and Mark Ekhoff, Build Site Supervisors and Habitat
Board members congratulated Jose and Patricia on being an
exemplary “partner family” putting in close to 1000 hours of “ sweat equity” on the
second Habitat home and their own home. Both commented on what wonderful,
cooperative and energetic partners the family was during the construction of the house.
Through donations of money and materials and volunteer labor, Habitat for Humanity of
Kankakee County was able to build the home and sell it to the Cabrales’s at an
affordable price. The Cabrales family purchased the home with a no-profit, zero
-interest loan, and their affordable monthly mortgage payments will be used to build
more Habitat houses. "This isn't just another housing program. We require our partner
families to help themselves; we give them the tools and the education through our
mandatory classes. They earn the opportunity, through volunteer hours, to PURCHASE
a habitat home, we don't give them away. We are fortunate to help these hard-working
families improve their living conditions." said Dave Johns, Habitat local Chairperson .
Carole Franke, HFH Board Member, Jose & Patricia Cabrera and
